What Makes A Good Golf Swing?


If you have ever studied the golf swing, you know that there are many ways to create a good golf swing. In fact, if we look at the best players in the world today they all have different swings. All of them have different levels of success and different methods to create their golf swing but they are all successful. My question is this: What makes a good golf swing?

There is a lot of information out there about what makes a good golf swing. Many people talk about how important it is to have a certain grip or use certain fundamentals when creating your golf swing. But what about what actually goes into creating the perfect golf swing?

The first thing we need to do when looking at what makes a good golf swing is look at how our body works. The human body has two main components: bones and muscles. Bones provide structure for our bodies while muscles provide movement and function. If we want to create the perfect golf swing, we need both of these components working together in harmony with each other and each other’s movements.

What Makes A Good Golf Swing?

The most common question I get asked by my friends is “how can I improve my golf swing?” Many people are looking for the magic secret to the perfect golf swing. I do not believe there is any one right way to swing a club. The key to a good golf swing is timing, which is unique to each individual and must be discovered through trial and error.

I am going to go over my personal observations of the golf swing and what has worked for me personally.

A good golf swing starts from the ground up. Having a strong, stable base is essential in order to create power in your swing. If you do not feel balanced as you start your downswing then you need to work on improving your flexibility and conditioning for your legs, hips, and lower back. A great exercise for this purpose is squatting with a heavy barbell across your shoulders on your back. Start with just the bar (45 lbs) then add weight as you feel comfortable. Do sets of 10 reps and aim for at least 3 sets a day if possible.

In order to create the perfect golf swing you must first understand what makes a good golf swing. First of all, let’s talk about ‘feel’ and ‘mechanics’. Feel is the most important aspect of any golfer’s game, especially the short game. Most great players have an uncanny sense of feel and do not rely on mechanics to make great shots. A golfer can hit a truly amazing shot with horrible mechanics and a horrible pre-shot routine, if he has great feel for the shot at hand. The reason why feel is so important is that it cannot be taught. A teacher can teach you proper posture, grip strength, body rotation, ball position and follow through but he cannot teach you how to FEEL your swing. What I mean by this is that you have to learn how your club head feels when it’s moving correctly and what it feels like when it’s moving incorrectly. In my opinion, the best way to learn how to play golf (and what makes a good golf swing) is by doing. The more you play and practice, the better you will get.

Next, your stance must be steady and balanced. Once you have assumed your position, check to make sure that your balance is distributed evenly through both feet. This will ensure stability as you rotate around your axis in order to follow through with your shot.

Once you have accomplished these two steps, you are ready to begin making your golf swing. There are three basic parts of a golf swing: the takeaway, downswing and follow through.

The takeaway begins when the golfer begins his first rotation during his backswing; this rotation will eventually become parallel to the ground upon completion of his backswing.

I am a golf instructor. I have been teaching and playing the game for over 40 years. And I think I know what makes a golf swing “good”. But, before I get into that, let’s ask ourselves another question:

What is the definition of a good golf swing?

I think there are two ways to answer this question.

One is to say that a good golf swing is one that produces the desired results. If you are trying to hit the ball straight, and you hit it straight, then your swing was good. If you are trying to hit the ball high, and you hit it high, then your swing was good. If you are trying to hit the ball far, and you hit it far, then your swing was good.

The other way of answering this question is to say that a good golf swing is one that produces consistent results. If every time you try to hit the ball straight, it goes straight; if every time you try to hit the ball high, it goes high; if every time you try to hit the ball far, it goes far; if every time your clubface is square at impact with the ball…then your swing is good.

In short, it is the combination of all the above. A good golf swing is one that many great golfers have used to consistently hit the ball well time and time again. It is the ability to get into a position at the top of your swing that allows you to create power and consistency. You must be able to reach this “good” position without forcing or manipulating your body. It should be a natural feeling.

My definition of a good golf swing is pretty simple really: “The ability to square the clubface at impact with an effortless motion.” I could elaborate on this by using words like “center-faced impact,” “effortless motion,” and “a balanced, athletic position” but I think my definition covers those items pretty well. Now, how do we get there?
