Sure there are slight variations to this rule but when it comes down to it, there are two different types of golf courses; links courses and parkland courses.
Links courses come from Scotland where the game originated. These courses were built on sandy dunes close to the sea and feature little vegetation (trees). Instead, they have tall grasses, bunkers, and hazards such as water and sand traps. They also feature large greens that slope towards the ocean. The wind is almost always a factor while playing a links course due to its seaside location.
The most famous links course in the world is St Andrews in Scotland which has been played since 1552 and hosts The Open Championship once every 5 years
