Whistling Straits Golf Course | A Review

Whistling Straits is a world-class golf course located in Kohler, Wisconsin. This course was designed by Pete Dye, who has been in the business for 40+ years. In fact, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame just last year (2008). He has designed over 135 courses and was even named “Golf Magazine’s Architect of the Year” on two separate occasions (1987 and 1998). Oh yeah, and he just happens to be 86 years old! According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Pete is one of only four living architects to have designed three or more U.S. Open courses. TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course (1982), The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island (1991), and Whistling Straits are those three courses.

This course is absolutely massive; it measures 7,514 yards from the tips. It has 5 sets of tees so that it accommodates all levels of play. I chose to play from the blue tees which measured 6,821 yards and had a rating/slope of 74.9/143. There are 54 holes at Whistling Straits: The Irish course, The River course, and

The Whistling Straits Golf Course is situated in the small town of Haven, Wisconsin. It was designed by Pete Dye and opened for play in July 1998. Over the last decade the course has hosted three PGA Championships, a U.S. Senior Open, a Ryder Cup and will be hosting its fourth PGA Championship this August.

The Irish course plays to just over 7,200 yards and has been rated as one of the toughest on the PGA tour. While The Straits is even longer and can play to more than 7600 yards from the tips, it is also considered to be one of the toughest courses in America.

Whistling Straits courses have no homes or businesses along the fairways, giving them a very secluded feel and an almost parkland like look that is more common in Britain and Ireland than in America. This unique style for an American course could be attributed to Pete Dye’s love for links style golf courses such as Royal County Down and St Andrews Old Course.
