Whistling Straits was founded by Steve Waugh and his wife Jeanine as a private club for professional golfers. They built the club on land that was originally owned by the public and had been farmed out by the town of Faribault, Minnesota. The course itself was designed by architect John Deere and he worked closely with Waugh to make sure that the layout was as challenging as possible.
The course at Whistling Straits is made up of eighteen holes and is used for both competitive and recreational golfers. It has been used for tournaments such as The Masters, The PGA Tour Championship, The Players Championship and many other high profile events. The course has also been used in television commercials and on television shows such as “The Big Break”.

There are a total of five different sets of tees for each hole so that players of all skill levels can play here comfortably. There are also over 2000 bunkers on this course making it one of the most bunker filled courses on tour as well!

Whistling Straits is a Par 72 course with a total length of 7,790 yards. It consists of four par 3s, ten par 4s and four par 5s. The course was designed by Pete Dye and opened in August 1998. Whistling Straits hosted the 2004 PGA Championship won by Vijay Singh and the 2007 U.S. Senior Open won by Brad Bryant. It will host its second PGA Championship in 2010.
The name “Whistling Straits” is derived from the wind that blows off Lake Michigan and through the fescue grass found throughout the course. With many bunkers, deep rough, and often unpredictable winds, Whistling Straits is considered to be one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour schedule.
The course is situated on land reclaimed from Lake Michigan, which once served as a military training ground for artillery practice that included live shells being fired into the lake. While building the golf course at Whistling Straits, construction crews unearthed over 500 artillery shells that had to be detonated by bomb squads sent in from Sheboygan County’s Sherriff’s department.
Whistling Straits Golf Course is located on the shores of Lake Michigan in Kohler, Wisconsin. The course, designed by Pete Dye, is one of only a handful of courses that is right on the edge of a major body of water. The 2000 and 2004 PGA Championship were held here and it will host the 2010 PGA Championship.
The course has five sets of tees with a par of 72 for every set. The yardage for the tips is 7790 and for the forward tees it’s 4767. There are over 100 bunkers which are hardpan sand areas with very sharp edges, deep pot bunkers, and long grass bunkers. Most are situated along the fairways or around greenside to penalize errant shots. The rough can be up to 4 inches thick surrounding the fairways and greens.
The fairways have a mixture of fescue grasses along with bentgrass putting surfaces. This gives the course an Irish links feel with firm fairways and fast greens.

Whistling Straits Golf Course is a golf course owned by the Kohler Company, located on 5 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline in Mosel, Wisconsin. It was the site of the 2004 PGA Championship, won by Vijay Singh, and will be the site of the 2010 PGA Championship.
The course has three eighteen-hole layouts. The Straits Course, which is ranked as one of the top 100 courses in the world, has hosted three major championships: the 2004 PGA Championship (won by Vijay Singh), 2007 U.S. Senior Open (won by Brad Bryant) and the 2015 PGA Championship (won by Jason Day).
The course opened in 1998 and is designed by Pete Dye with input from professional golfer Jack Nicklaus. The course opened on its original site in 1998 but due to flooding that occurred in 1997 it was decided to move it to its current location in Mosel, Wisconsin. The course was designed with input from Jack Nicklaus but he never played it because he was too busy designing courses at the time.

The Irish Course – An 18-hole course that opened in 2000, the seventh hole of this course is the longest hole in PGA Tour history at 723 yards.
The Straits Course – This was the original course, which opened in 1998 and was built on top of an abandoned military airfield from World War II.
The River Course – This course opened in 2001 and offers a spectacular view of Lake Michigan. The River Course was designed to resemble an old English links style course and it closely follows the contours of its terrain with few trees and several water hazards.
The Meadow Valleys Course – This course opened in September 2003 and also follows an old English links style.

Though the course at Whistling Straits is not located on the coast, the design elements create the illusion that it is. The holes are set among sand dunes, grasses and windswept trees that mirror the coastal terrain of the British Isles. The course features more than 1,000 bunkers; some are deep, others are shallow, but all have a cavernous appearance.
The course at Whistling Straits is one of two in Wisconsin that have been chosen to host the U.S. Open (the other being Blackwolf Run’s River Course). It hosted its first major tournament in 2004 when it held the PGA Championship, which it will do again in 2015 and 2020.[3] It also was selected as the site for the 2007 U.S. Senior Open, which Hale Irwin won by one stroke over Brad Bryant, and 2010 PGA Championship won by Martin Kaymer over Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson in a 3-hole playoff.[4][5] In 2015 Whistling Straits will host its third PGA Championship, fourth overall major championship and second U.S. Open in 2020.[6][
