1. Get a Smartphone Camera Tripod Adapter
The single most important piece of equipment you can buy to improve your golf photos is a tripod adapter for your smartphone camera.
You don’t need a $200 camera or a $2,000 lens. The best camera is the one that’s with you and that’s most likely your smartphone camera.
The number one limitation of the smartphone camera is the lack of optical zoom and image stabilization, but we can overcome these limitations with a simple $10 solution: a tripod adapter.
These ingenious adapters slip onto your smartphone and then into any standard tripod mount, allowing you to use your phone on any regular tripod or monopod, as well as many other accessories like selfie sticks and clamps.
It’s a cliche but it’s true: technology has changed everything. Not just everything, but people as well. Humans have always been visual creatures, and the art of photography is one of the most important inventions of modern times.
Photography is a way to capture time, to preserve moments that would otherwise fade away. It’s a way to express ourselves and show others what we see, feel, think and experience. Whether you’re an amateur photographer or a professional, there’s only one thing that will make you better at your craft: practice.
Photography is not easy! Taking good photos requires more than just point-and-shoot. It requires patience, knowledge of your equipment and how to use it, and experience.
There are many ways for your photographs to go wrong, especially in low light situations. The following tips will help you take better low light golf photos with your smartphone camera:
GENERAL TIPS:
– If you have time, check the weather and plan for the best lighting. Watch out for the sun’s harsh rays which can create a lot of lens flare and hard shadows across your subject.
– If you don’t have a tripod or selfie stick, use your bag, a tree or a rock to steady your camera – this will help keep your images sharp.
– Experiment with different angles – shoot from above/below and in front of/behind your subject.
– Get up close! Fill the frame to show as much detail as possible.
– Don’t let golfers walk away until you are done taking their picture. It is very frustrating to set up a shot only to find that the golfer is already walking away when you snap the photo.
– Be respectful of other golfers and abide by any rules established by the course administration before you start taking pictures.

Photos in this blog post were taken at the Ridge Golf Course on March 18th, 2017. The photos were taken with a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. I used Haze and One Plus One filters from the Snapseed application for these images.
The first photo was taken on the 6th hole while we were waiting to hit our second shots into the green. This was shot at an ISO of 100, 1/1400 sec shutter speed, f2.2 aperture with a focal length of 4mm (24mm in 35mm equivalent). I cropped and rotated this image a bit in Snapseed as well since it was not straight when originally shot (I made sure to keep my phone level when shooting).
The second photo was taken on the 8th hole while we waited for others to hit their tee shots. This one also was shot at an ISO of 100, 1/1600 sec shutter speed, f2.2 aperture with a focal length of 4mm (24mm in 35mm equivalent).
