Bridges Golf Course is an 18-hole golf facility located on the East end of Long Island in Wading River, NY. The course is 7,000 yards long from the back tees with a par of 71. The front nine was designed by world famous Golf Course Architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and the back nine by his son Rees Jones.
The course is a challenging mix of links-style golf and traditional parkland design, with an abundance of sand bunkers and water hazards that come into play. Bridges has become one of Long Islands favorite public golf courses.

But what sets the Bridges apart from other top courses is that you can get on without waiting months. And you can reserve your tee time far in advance. How? You don’t have to be a member of the club, or even know one well. Just buy some golf balls.
The club sells them at cost: $38.50 per dozen Pro V1s, $34 for Callaway HX Tour 56s or Nike One Tours, $29 for Titleist NXT Tours or Maxfli Noodle Ice/Noodle Long & Soft/Noodle Straight balls (the latter made by Maxfli’s parent company, TaylorMade).
You pay by credit card over the phone, and then you have 90 days to play as many rounds as you want with those balls. It’s not unusual to see visitors carrying boxes of 2 or 3 dozen balls–$116 worth of Pro V1s
In the early 2000s, I was briefly a member of a golf club. It was fun. I got to play at a course that’s open only to members and their guests. I got to play with people who had probably been playing there for years, many of whom were much better than me. I became friends with some of them.
It was expensive, though. A thousand dollars a year in membership fee, plus greens fees on top of that. And each time you wanted to play you had to check the daily tee sheet online and call up the pro shop to reserve a time.
I decided to quit after two years when I moved out of the area, but I decided to keep paying my dues for another year because my father-in-law liked playing there and might want to use it as his own guest once in a while.
When that year was up, I got an email from the club saying “We see you haven’t been using your membership much this year: would you like us to put you on our waiting list?”
