It is a prominent civic center and cultural attraction that holds the world-famous San Diego Zoo as well as numerous art galleries, artist studios, museums, and gardens. The park’s site was originally occupied by seasonal camping grounds for local Native Americans, who would move to the area in the winter to take advantage of natural springs. In 1868, California’s State Legislature set aside 1,400 acres for use as a “public park” or “pleasuring ground” for the City of San Diego “for the purpose of public recreation, health, pleasure and amusement.” In 1892-1903, it was developed as “City Park,” making it one of the first parks in the country created by city government.
Balboa Park hosted both the 1915 and 1935 World Expositions on its large central exposition site. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Today Balboa Park is managed and maintained by the not-for-profit Balboa Park Conservancy in partnership with city government.
