The first recorded instance of a disc golf game was played as early as 1926 when a group of students at Yale University threw tin pie plates into metal garbage cans. The game picked up popularity with Frisbee being promoted by Wham-O which led to its founding in 1948 and again in 1958 when they hired Ed Headrick who worked on the development of the first official disc golf target.

The first course was built in 1974 in Oak Grove Park, Pasadena, California and by 1976 the game had gained enough momentum to be included in the American Flying Disc Open with an entry fee of $5 and a prize money of $1500. The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) was founded in 1982, and as of today there are more than 5800 courses across the world with more than 900,000 registered players.
