Since the first course on Putterham in Boston opened in 1912, miniature golf has grown in popularity with over 1,000 courses worldwide.

Here at Treetop Adventure Golf, we’re passionate about mini golf. We love it so much that we created a whole indoor rainforest filled with lush foliage and waterfalls for you to play in! But we’re sure there are some things you didn’t know about the world of adventure golf.
So, here are 15 fun facts that you may not already know about mini golf and our very own jungle-themed mini golf courses!
Fact 1: The most common colour of mini golf ball is white.
Fact 2: Everyone starts somewhere! Tiger Woods first putted with a plastic club at the age of six months.
Fact 3: Miniature golf was initially developed to be played indoors during the winter months.
Fact 4: During its early years, miniature golf was referred to as ‘Tom Thumb Golf’ in the United States.
Fact 5: On average, a course contains 18 holes. Each hole is designed to be no more than 50 yards long.
Fact 6: In the UK, Adventure Golf usually refers to outdoor courses with artificial surfaces such as astroturf or concrete rather than traditional putting greens (which are called ‘miniature golf’).

These are all great fun to play and can be enjoyed by everyone from young families to groups of friends or colleagues.
But did you know that back in the 1920’s there was a craze for “golf gardens” which were like adventure golf courses? These courses were made out of concrete, were brightly coloured and included water features.
The first miniature golf course was built in 1930, but it wasn’t until the 1950’s that they became popular with the advent of holiday parks in America. The growth of holiday parks in Europe also saw a rise in miniature golf courses that were often associated with fun fairs and carnivals.
Today there are over 1000 adventure golf courses in Europe alone! Adventure Golf Services have built over 30% of these courses which means we’re responsible for over 300 courses!

Adventure Golf, also known as miniature golf, crazy golf, crazy putt-putt golf, mini-golf, mini-putt and putt-putt golf is a miniature version of the sport of golf, where participants use clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course using the fewest number of strokes.
It is played on courses consisting of a series of holes; each hole should contain a tee area to start from and a putting green containing the actual hole. The worldwide standard for mini-golf courses is 18 holes.
There are two main types of miniature golf: “themed” or “adventure” golf that usually has artificial surfaces and obstacles, and “target” or “competitive” golf which uses natural terrain and normally has no obstacles.
Miniature Golf was invented by Garnet Carter in Tennessee in 1927. Carter built his first miniature golf course on Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga as an attraction for tourists who were traveling to see the scenic views atop nearby Lookout Mountain. He named it Tom Thumb Golf after a storybook character popular with children at the time.
