Q-Factor


The Q-Factor is the distance between the outside edge of the rim and the inside edge of the collar at 20″ above the ground. The Q-Factor is a factor directly related to stability and performance.

A low Q-Factor, such as that measured from the Discraft Nuke, a 21 1/4″ Q-Factor, is extremely stable for flight. Many players prefer this type of HST for its straight flying characteristics.

A high Q-Factor, such as that measured from Innova’s Eagle, 22 1/2″, will typically produce more overstable flight paths due to increased torque upon release.

Every basket has a different Q-Factor. Most players have a preference for one or the other. Some baskets are more likely to spit out putts (Chainstars, Mach V, Prodigy). Others are more likely to catch putts (DGA Mach Lite, Innova DISCatcher Sport, many older models). The higher the Q-Factor, generally speaking, the less likely it is that your disc will come out after hitting a pole on your putt.

There are other factors that can affect this as well, such as the pitch of the basket and its cage configuration (vertical bars versus spaced-out chains). But in most cases you can expect that a basket with a high Q-Factor will catch more putts than one with a low Q-Factor. This can be good or bad depending on how you look at it.

The higher the Q-Factor, generally speaking, the less likely it is that your disc will come out after hitting a pole on your putt.
