The man who gave a golf course his name was John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. He gave it in honor of his late brother, Joseph P. Kennedy, who in 1928 built America’s first modern golf course in Palm Beach, Florida.

After Jack Kennedy became president, his Defense Department asked him to make some changes to Fort McNair in Washington DC, where both he and his wife Jackie had grown up. It was designed by the British architect Sir Robert Matthew. The Defense Department wanted a golf course there.

But he found the property useful for other purposes: it was close enough to some of New York’s wealthiest neighborhoods that he could look down from his apartment at people playing tennis or bicycling on the park’s grounds. And he made sure that the golf course was designed to be accessible to all these people.

The entire site (the entire northern half of Long Island) was purchased by Rouse’s company in 1963 for $8.5 million dollars ($26 million in 2014 dollars). One reason that price seemed reasonable was that six years earlier, John F. Kennedy had given
