The course was designed by John Van Kleek in 1895 and is the oldest public course in the United States. Though relatively short by today’s standards, it still offers a challenge to golfers of all skill levels because of its tight tree-lined fairways and difficult greens. The some 200 species of trees that line its fairways also make it one of the prettiest places to take a walk in the Bronx. The National Golf Foundation has recently donated $1 Million dollars to restore this historic course to its original glory. Improvements include a new irrigation system, new tee boxes, new bunkers and renovated greens.

The Canadian National Institute for the Blind Golf Course is one of the best-kept secrets in all of Ontario’s golf courses. It offers golfers of all abilities a chance to play a challenging nine-hole layout that would normally cost $22 on weekends and holidays. But if you’re willing to volunteer your time as a caddy to the blind, you can play it for free anytime.
CNIB is situated just outside of Brantford, Ont., home of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, and features some spectacular scenary and elevated tees that overlook Lake Erie. The course’s par 3s are particularly tough thanks to false fronts on each green.

The first of these courses is The Links at the Dunes, a par 3 course located in Florence, Oregon. This course has been voted one of the top public courses in the United States. The Links at the Dunes has not always been free to play. It was purchased by a local church back in 2009, and they decided to make it open to the public for free. That’s right — no greens fees, no cart fees, nothing. The only caveat is that there are no weekend tee times or tournaments available. However, if you’ve got a few days off during the week and you’re in the area, it is definitely worth checking out this beautiful course.
