As a preface to my top 10 tips, I wanted to say that the best way to improve your golf swing and overall game is by taking less time off between each round of golf that you play. The more rounds of golf you play throughout the season, the better chance there is of improving your game.

1. Start at the top!
In order to develop a consistent golf swing it is imperative that you build your swing from the ground up. This means starting with your grip, then moving on to your stance, posture and alignment and finally working towards developing your golf swing. If you skip any of these phases in the learning process you will most likely develop bad habits that will be difficult and time consuming to correct later on down the road. Most amateur golfers have one thing in common; they all have some bad habit they are trying to correct with their golf swing. Some of these bad habits can range from using too much of their upper body or swaying during the downswing to pivoting off of their back foot (which is one of the most common bad habits). These types of bad habits can be very frustrating for amateur golfers as they try to develop a consistent golf swing. So remember, start at the top!

1. Practice: The only way to improve your golf is to practice. Your objective is to get to a point where you can hit the same shot over and over again. Practice hitting the ball from the same lie, at the same target, until you can hit that shot time after time.
2. Swing: Remember that your swing plane determines where the ball goes. Practice swinging along a plane line or with a flat plane stick in front of you. When you use your plane stick, place it on an angle on the ground and make sure that the butt end of the club points down your target line. As long as your club is on plane, you will find that you are able to hit consistent shots.
3. Grip: The grip should be firm enough so that it does not turn in your hands during impact but loose enough so that it does not restrict movement of your swing and hands through impact.
4. Posture: Stand with knees slightly flexed and have a slight bend in your back; this will ensure that the weight is shifted onto the balls of your feet for greater balance during the swing. Good balance allows for more freedom of movement through impact which will lead to greater power in your shots too!
5. Aim: Take a look at
There are a few things in life that are quite as frustrating as thinking one is about to hit the perfect golf shot, only to have it go awry. Then, one goes back to the drawing board and tries to determine what went wrong with the shot. One of the most common faults or errors that many golfers make is casting the club during the downswing. Casting happens when the hands and wrists suddenly release their angle shortly before impact, which causes an early release of the club head through impact.
Casting means that you are releasing stored energy prematurely, which means less power at impact and more than likely an off target shot. Golfers who exhibit a cast often times will hit a slice or a pull, depending on how early they release their hands. It can also cause one to top the ball or even miss it completely if one releases too soon.
Cast is avoided by keeping both wrists cocked until well past impact with the ball. One should feel like he/she is hitting with his/her left hand (for right handed golfers) through impact and letting his/her right hand catch up later on in the follow-through. This will keep one from casting and help one hit better shots more consistently.
